Boehner Promises Armed Services Seat to Hartzler

Minority Leader John Boehner has promised that Missouri Republican Vicky Hartzler would get a seat on the Armed Services Committee if she wins and Republicans take control of the House. Hartzler, a former state Representative, is running against Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton in southwest Missouri, and with two large bases in the district, military issues have defined the race. Hartzler isn’t the first House candidate Boehner has promised a committee seat to. Republican Ed Martin, who’s running against Rep. Russ Carnahan (D) in the suburbs south of St. Louis, was promised a seat on the Veterans Affairs committee. Carnahan doesn’t serve on the Veterans Affairs committee and Martin, a one-time chief of staff to former Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt, isn’t a veteran. But his press release on the potential appointment explained that veterans issues are a high priority for him. Boehner has said Republican state Rep. Randy Demmer will get a seat on the Agriculture Committee if he defeats Democratic Rep. Tim Walz in southern Minnesota. Walz was appointed to the Agriculture Committee when he defeated Republican Rep. Gil Gutknecht, who was also a member of the committee, in 2006. Hawaii Rep. Charles Djou may be getting the biggest prize: Boehner said he’ll get a seat on the Appropriations Committee if he wins re-election next month after winning the special election to replace Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D) in May. Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inuoye (D) chairs the Senate Appropriations committee, so the appointment would give the island state an outsized influence on Appropriations.

DSCC Pulls Robin Carnahan Ads

Newsguy Jason Church just reported via metro that the DSCC just canceled two weeks worth of ads supporting Robin Carnahan’s run for US Senate. From the National Journal : But at this point, it appears as though the DSCC moving money out of the state. The ad cancellations are an indication that national Democrats are growing bearish on Secretary of State  Robin Carnahan ‘s (D) chances against Rep.  Roy Blunt (R), as polling shows Blunt with a sizable lead. Carnahan has been struggling against Blunt even since before the primary in which Blunt scored more votes than all the candidates in the Democratic primary combined. Missouri: Skelton, Hartzler Sharing Endorsements

Posted in 2012 Elections, Congress on September 15th, 2010 by admin – Be the first to comment

If endorsements are any indication, Missouri groups are finding a lot to like in both Rep. Ike Skelton and his opponent, former state Rep. Vicky Hartzler. This week, Missouri Right to Life endorsed both candidates after having endorsed Skelton in the past. And while Skelton received the Friends of Farm Bureau award given to Members of Congress, Hartzler received the Missouri Farm Bureau endorsement. Skelton, who was first elected in 1976, has left nothing to chance in what could be his first competitive race in decades. He has run four ads in the Columbia-Jefferson City and Springfield markets and began running an ad in the Kansas City market last week, too. The newest ad accuses his Republican opponent, former state Rep. Vicky Hartzler, of neglecting veterans. “When it comes to Vicky Hartzler’s views on the military and veterans, there’s a troubling pattern,” a narrator says. “Hartzler voted against reenlistment pay for the National Guard and voted against funding to help bury fallen Guardsmen.” Hartzler survived a tough primary in late July and got the endorsement of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) in August. She went up with her first general election ad this week. It ties Skelton to Democratic policies. “What we value as Americans, what gave us such great opportunity and freedom, is under attack,” Hartzler says, and a narrator takes over. “Congressman Skelton’s solution? Radically wrong votes for taxpayer bailouts and government takeovers, record debt, higher job-killing taxes for families and slander Vicki Hartzler’s outstanding record in support of our troops.” CQ-Roll Call rates this race Leans Democratic .

Thinking …

24 minutes ago Something to note: Massie was invited by the Lt. Governor of Missouri and was reportedly excited to debut her song about 9/11 at the 9/12 event. It was never marketed as anything but a tea party event. Sad that the left is so uncomfortable with the idea of a huge grassroots movement which isn’t under the sway of a political party. Independence = less control for big regimes. I guess that would scare some, thus the need to convince others against taking part. Who doesn’t love individual liberty and smaller government? As a conservatarian independent, I look forward to hanging with the Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and other indies at the 9/12 event like at every grassroots rally!
